Learn The Interesting History Of Russian Samovars

The basic traditional Russian Samovar is a large metal container used for heating and boiling water. This metal boiling brewer is known to have been historically used throughout Russia and other various Slavic Nations while mention of Iran, Turkey and Kashmir using the Samovar is also there. The Samovar has been said to have originally been invented in Central Asia, but Russia strongly disputes this claim. Samovar is said to be of Russian origin with the proof of origination by the Russian “Samovar” named being stamped upon on the samovars of 18th century Iran.

The traditional Samovars were originally heated with coal or dried pine cones, but later on became electrical and were commonly used for boil water. There are many sizes, shapes and designs created on the large metal body while the beautiful Russian silver with enamel inlay samovars is exquisite. They evolved from the plain Samovar versions to the much more intricate details and styles. In some of the very first designs the Samovar has a faucet close to the lower area along with a pipe made of metal that vertically runs through middle of the metal container.

The water is heated by the fuel filled metal pipe. There is a top smoke stack cover to keep out the draft of cooler air. A tea pot can be sat upon the top of the hot water container to keep the concentrated tea warm, or a honey and spice Russian drink, ready for consumption. The heavy tea concentration would be diluted with as each cup of tea while preparing drink for family or guests sitting around the Samovar.

The original Russian honey and spice drink was heated by a similar device before the Samovar, called a Sbitennik. Fedor Lisitsyn of Tula Russia was a gunsmith maker and in free time on their hands, they would create beautiful Samovars. It was in the late 18th Century that they invented their personal Samovar burner that used charcoal.

Although the very first Samovar was made for their work shop, it was an item better working than the Sbitennik, thus making Samovar an item that eventually came into demand by others in town. Lisitsyn and his sons started to produce Samovars with success and put the town of Tula on the map by the 1830’s as the top manufacturing spot for Samovars. By the 19th century Samovar manufacturing was spread throughout Russia and beyond, into many other countries.

GMAT Gains International Regard

Hopeful business students worldwide have made the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) test easier to access. By popular demand, GMAT testing institutions the world over has exceeded the 500 mark. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) under the management of Pearson VUE, since 2006, reflects the present rise in demand for GMAT examination centers by an overall 25 percent increase in GMAT evaluations held.

The GMAT test is offered at test centers all over the globe with periodic and on-demand testing conducted on a regular basis. Registered GMAT test centers make definite all of the check in procedures and test safety measures are observed and appropriate with GMAT centers all over the world. The test centers also emphasize a design which enables favorable supervision of all applicants taking the test.

Executive vice president of GMAC, Peg Jobst states by “Increasing access to the GMAT will provide schools with a bigger pool of candidates to choose from.” He goes on to add conforming with the increasing number of GMAT applicants globally each year “The need for skilled managers in a global economy is fueling the growth of quality management education programs around the world”.

Nearly 267,000 candidates, an amazing number, established a record for the most number of candidates to answer the exam in the GMAT examination in 2009. The number of GMAT applicants is acquiring international popularity making it increasingly diverse and is quickly growing. About 51%, a little more than half of the applicants that appeared in the GMAT exam last year were from countries other than the United States of America. Since its foundation in 1954, for the very first time, has the number of non US candidates surpassed the number of American applicants.

The data collected shows the significant role China and India have played on the progress of business and management education. The numbers of the GMAT exam confirm test applicants from China and India on a increase. While the number of GMAT tests answered by Chinese nationals grew by 35 percent in 2009, to 23,550. The number of tests answered by Indian citizens went up by 7% in 2009, to 30,633. This shows a tremendous improvement as compared to the number of applicants who answered the test in 2008.

“When will I get married (or meet my life partner or soul mate)?”

Many young adults ask us this question. Though we can determine through our readings and analyses when someone is likely to experience a compatible love connection, we always recommend to those not yet in their 30s to avoid spending too much energy looking for a serious relationship or marriage partner.

Many of them would be much better off going with the flow, dating, having fun, enjoying their youth, learning who they are beyond the social programming, and focusing on their careers so they have a life before they try to make a relationship “permanent” through a legally-binding agreement.

It would be nice if you met a compatible “life partner” early in life and remained happily together for the “rest of your life.” Unfortunately, most people’s soul schedule or personal fate doesn’t always include what they want, when they’d like to experience it, contrary to popular New Age opinion, no matter how much they “master the art of manifestation.”

Also, the concepts of lock-it-in-forever-happy-marriage and life partners are human, artificial constructs, not spiritually-based; our belief is that on a soul level they are viewed as unrealistic, and life-long relationships aren’t perceieved as mandatory or even necessary in many cases when a soul is planning the next incarnation.

If you think about it, in most cases, a fulfilling, satisfying relationship with the same partner from your 20s until you die of old age is unrealistic since everyone changes (for better or worse) at different rates. Yes, some couples do “grow old together” if it’s destined to work out that way, but if it’s not, people don’t have to suffer for the rest of their lives. It’s not the 1800s any more, thankfully. People don’t need to rely entirely on a spouse to survive anymore. You now have the option of being independent and being with a partner because you want to, not just because you’re settling in order to survive.

As far as the notion of a “twin flame” soul mate goes, we’ve found through our long-term, empirical research that it’s as mythical as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny; it’s an illusionary and subjective concept. Although some soul mates are better than others, after all the illusions fade away, there is no perfect match. Distorted, romantic idealism can be an innocuous escape, but too often it leads people astray, detracting from their earthly purposes and making life more complicated.

Instead of viewing marriage as an important destination and wondering when you’ll be swept off your feet, a better question to ask would be when are you most likely to meet someone who is compatible, or experience one of your more compatible relationships.

In addition to accepting the truth that not all relationships are meant to last a lifetime, we also recommend accepting that everyone has many soul mates. These two suggestions alone will save you much heartache and stress.

We’ve found that all relationships have destined starting and ending times (emotionally and romantically), and most are not meant to last “forever,” even if a couple chooses to stay together, essentially as roommates for whom the flame has long since extinguished, if it even existed at all. If you look at the big picture, a life-long relationship may seem ideal, and it may be part of some people’s path, but from a spiritual perspective, it isn’t as important as you may think.

If you would like to meet a compatible soul mate, make the most of yourself and have faith that you will meet the right people at the right time. Letting go of any resentment or regret from past relationships and accepting your status of being single will clear the way for a more compatible person, and remaining open to new possibilities instead of thinking in “all (‘The One,’ ‘Forever’) or nothing” terms will lead to more success in your love life. If you’re already involved with someone, letting go of expectations (that may or may not be related to the “twin flame” or other soul mate myths, or “acceptable” social standards) and accepting the person and situation as they are will lead to more harmony.

We can understand if you don’t want to make the first move out of fear of being embarrassed or rejected. But it’s really not your right to know what someone is thinking unless they tell or show you.

Meditate and ask for signs about whether or not it’s a good idea for you to make it clear you are interested or to contact the person. You have nothing to lose, unless you work together. In that case, it’s usually best to remain friends due to the possibility of the relationship issues causing problems at work.

Independence and Early China Trade

The Treaty of Paris, signed on September 3rd 1783 and approved by the Congress of the Confederation in January 1784, was the formality that ended the Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States.

A new nation arose from the American War of Independence.

Like all things in their infancy, The United States of America struggled.

The United States poor, and somewhat crippled, without foreign trade, struggled to avoid economic turmoil.

The Empress of China, a merchant American ship sailed to the rescue.

Sailing out of New York harbor, on Washington’s Birthday, February 1784 under American colors, captained by John Green, carrying a cargo of ginseng root grown in Appalachia, The Empress of China was bound for China.

Then as now, Ginseng root was held in high esteem by the Chinese for its medicinal healing qualities and became a major Chinese import. Exported by Britain prior to the revolution the colonies saw none of the benefits of the trade. America had fought for its Independence and had won, ginseng grew wild in Appalachia, and the United States now could enjoy a monopoly in ginseng export.

Other early cargos exported by the United States consisted of silver bullion, known as specie, (Spanish silver dollars) and animal pelts from the Northwest.

The Empress of China with a cargo of teas and silk returned to New York harbor in May of 1785, awarding her investors 25 percent in profits on their risk.

The demand by Americans for Chinese good such as, tea, silk, lacquer ware, furniture, and porcelain made China Trade a highly profitable enterprise. Tea was the drink of America and China was the supplier.

Philadelphia, New York, and Salem Massachusetts played the major maritime centers, with Providence, Rhode Island and Baltimore also taking a part in the China Trade at a later date.

The risks of a voyage to China were extremely high, involving bad weather, navigating around the Cape of Good Hope and the constant threat of pirates, however the rewards were real also. The first three millionaires of the United States had been involved in the China Trade.

The early entrepreneur spirit and courage of American merchants, and merchant seamen in the China Trade had established a new path for United States commerce, which would add substance to the early American economy and ultimately establish America as a global leader in international trade.

Athens Greece – The Mitropolis

This square is dominated by the Mitropolis (Cathedral), a modern basilica begun in 1840 and completed in 1855. The interior is over-decorated with indifferent paintings and marbles. Left of the entrance is the sarcophagus of the heroic Patriarch of Constantinople, Grigorios V, hanged by the Turks at the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1821. In marked contrast to the mediocrity of this huge, pretentious building is the small church beside it, the Little Mitropolis. This miniature masterpiece of simple grace was erected in the twelfth century on the site of a church which was built by the Byzantine Empress Irene, a native of Athens, in the eighth century. Although this enchanting little church is dedicated to Panaghia Gorgoepikoos (All Holy Virgin who quickly grants prayers), and to St. Eleutherios protector of women in childbirth, it is commonly known as the Little Mitropolis.

This church differs from all others in Athens in the material used in its construction. Instead of the characteristic masonry of square-cut stones with thin brick courses employed by Byzantine architects, it is built entirely of marble. Its beauty is enhanced by the usual treatment of the outer walls, into which parts of reliefs and other fragments of architectural detail, Classical, Byzantine and Frankish, have been built. The most interesting of these relics are to be seen on the west facade (the main entrance). Here, in the center of the lintel, two lions, one on either side of a cross, face each other. Above the lintel, on both sides of the entrance, are Byzantine reliefs of allegorical animals, at the far left is a relief- probably Frankish – of a young woman standing by the side of a Cross of Lorraine. Above the entrance is a long plaque in relief, flanked by two Corinthian capitals, all three from a monument of the fourth century BC. This plaque is the most remarkable decoration of the church and depicts a liturgical, or festal calendar, showing the twelve months and the five seasons of the Attic year. The Athenians observed a lunar year, which began with the first new moon of the summer solstice. The months are represented either by the conventional signs of the Zodiac or by human or animal personifications of them; the seasons by symbolical figures. The scenes illustrate the principal activities of each month and season and the religious festivals associated with them.

The calendar reads from left to right and begins with scenes from the festival of the Great Urban Dionysia in the month of Elaphebolion (March-April): a priest offers a libation to the god, while attendants lead animals destined for sacrifice; a ram represents the sign of Aries; Munychion (April-May): Artemis, as goddess of the chase, is shown holding a deer by the horns (festival of Elaphebolia); the fore and hind legs of a bull (the body is obscured by a Byzantine cross) stand for the Zodiacal sign of Taurus. The month of Thargelion (May-June, the first month of Summer) is represented by a torchbearer and the figure of Apollo, (festival of the Thargelia held in honor of this god), while the representations of the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, stand for the sign of Gemini. Skirophorion (June July) is represented by a naked athlete, (symbolizing summer); the sacrifice of a plough-ox (festival of Diipoleia, in honor of Zeus), and the sign of Cancer. Hekatombaion (July-August), shows representative figures of men and women participants in the procession of the Great Panathenaea; the prow of a ship, moving on wheels, on the mast of which Athena’s peplos was hoisted as a sail. This is also obscured by the addition of a second Byzantine cross; the Lion and Sirius stand for the sign of Leo. Metageitnion, is represented by a winged woman bearing a basket of fruit; Hercules picking the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, his consort Hebe, goddess of eternal youth, while Persephone holding an ear of corn in her left hand represents the sign of Virgo. Boedromion (September-October), is represented by the figure of Apollo Boedromios (festival of the Boedromia), a horseman, and the claws i.e. of the Scorpion. The early Greek astronomers so designated the Zodiacal sign of the Balance, (Latin, Libra).

The month of Pyanepsion (October-November, the first month of Autumn), during which the harvest festival of Pyanepsia, in honor of the departing god of Summer, Apollo, was held, is illustrated by the figures of a patrician; a boy (symbolizing Autumn) carrying a branch of olive and small vessels full of honey, wine and oil; a man holding a cluster of grapes (symbolical of the vintage); a canephore (one of the nobly-born maidens who carried baskets containing sacrificial offerings on their heads during the great festivals) and the Zodiacal sign of Scorpio. Maimakterion (November-December, the first month of the Winter), during which the Lesser, or rustic, Dionysia was celebrated with the tasting of the new wine, shows actors performing at this feast, and the figures of a man sowing and another ploughing; a centaur symbolizes the sign of Sagittarius. The month of Poseidon (December-January), shows an old man wrapped in a heavy mantle (symbolizing Winter), a figure symbolic of gymnastics, judges presiding over a cockfight, a he-goat standing for the sign of Capricorn; and finally the month of Gamelion, during which the Lenea, the festival of the Vats was celebrated, and the favorite month for weddings, shows a bridegroom crowned with a wedding garland, a boy on a ram (symbolizing marriage), and a nymph.

From the plaque, which is in an excellent state of preservation, are only missing the six figures of Anthesterion (February-March, the first month of Spring), including its corresponding Zodiacal sign of Pisces; the first figure personifying Elaphebolion and Aquarius, the Zodiacal sign for Gamelion. North side (facing the cathedral): a short frieze of acanthus leaves above the doorway; Classical stelai with female figures; other stelai decorated with vases superimposed on shields; and an uncommon stele of a bearded man standing between two Latin crosses. The South side presents fragments of triglyphs and metopes from Classical friezes; above the doorway crossed torches; a deco rated wheel; a larger torch; a lamp, a bucranium (a sculptured ox skull, a common motif found in the metopes of Doric frieze); a heraldic eagle, and geometrical designs. To the east, classical stelai with female figures, under the gable; reliefs of the Cross of Lorraine, an eagle, a lion killing a stag, an armorial shield; geometrical designs, and various inscriptions. Apart from the finely sculptured door-frame separating the narthex from the sanctuary, the interior is in a deplorable state: the frescoes are either peeling, or age and neglect have rendered them almost invisible.

For thousands of years Beauty secrets have been passed down from one generation to the next. In fact we still use some of these fabulous remedies today. Such as milk baths whom Cleopatra was known for (I heard she even soaked herself in a tub of wine). So I thought why not talk to women around our globe and find some beauty secrets we all can benefit from;

First I’d like to share a secret from my mother Betty, when I was a teenager she drilled the use of sunscreen and moisturizer into my head along with the “no frown” policy.

My mother would say if you frown like that you end up looking like when you get older. I would practice not frowning and believe it or not, it worked-Look mom no Botox.

-Angai is originally from South India and her mother Swathi passed a skincare secret that can help all skin types. Angai would grind up green lentils to a powder then add some ground rice and a little water, enough to make a paste. Leave on to dry and rinse off gently exfoliating your skin.

Secret From the Past, this potion is from ancient Egypt called Fenugreek youth serum. It is made with one teaspoon of dried fenugreek seeds and ¼ cup of sweet almond oil.

Preparation; Crush the seeds lightly in a motar and pestle and add them to the oil. Allow them to soak for thirty minutes. Strain the seeds from the oil. Gently massage the oil into your skin while thinking “youthful” thoughts.

-Kristen from Ohio has a Scandinavian ritual from her mother Kaaren. “When we were kids, body brushing was a necessity before bathing”. The brushing improves circulation and exfoliates your skin.

-Laura from the UK says her mum has a great complexion and to use as little on the face as possible. Cleanse your face and use a good moisturizer and that’s all she likes to use.

Secret From the Past, In Korea the women would use the starchy milky water from soaked white rice to wash their faces. The result is lighter looking skin and a soft dewy complexion.

Lisa said when they would go on holiday to Costa Rica her mother would return home with containers of red volcano clay. She would mix it up with some water and use it as a mask- along with Oil of Olay moisturizer or just plain olive oil.

Nicole C. Mullen- recording artist who resides in Tennessee has a great way to exfoliate her face; baking soda mixed with water enough to make a paste and gently apply in circular motion and rinse. Nicole uses Vaseline on her face at night as a moisturizer.

Secret From the Past, Chamomile dates back to Ancient Egypt and women would use the flowers and crush the petals of the flower to beautify and protect their skin. Here is a recipe that will depuff your eyes;

” 2 thin potatoes slices

” Chamomile tea (loose or bag)

” Aloe Vera Gel

Soak potato slices in tea, and remove to dip into aloe Vera gel. Leave on for 20 minutes.

Secret From the Past, In Beijing the empress of China used a jade face-roller on her face in the basis of reflexology. It helps keep the blood circulation moving.

LeAnn Albrecht singer and songwriter travels the world with her husband Carl, she has some fashion advice from her mother. LeAnn is a minister’s daughter and growing up there was little money she told me. LeAnn’s mother would buy her clothes from thrift stores and maybe ‘add’ to them making the clothes look great. BONUS BEAUTY SECRET: To fight irritated and inflamed skin, women in South Africa steep a cup of rooibos – a tealeaf that is native to the area and contains zinc and alpha hydroxy acid – allow it to cool and then topically apply the liquid to the skin with a cotton ball. The tannins in the tea sooth and relieve discomfort.

The Faberge Egg – A Timeless Russian Art

The Faberge Egg comes to us from Russia originally. There are deep ties to the Orthodox religion in Russia, so it can be assumed that this finds its way over to the holiday of Easter. These bejeweled eggs were designed and made by the House of Faberge from 1885 through 1917. Smaller versions of the ornate eggs were worn around the neck as a pendant. The Faberges are made from precious metals such as gold and adorn with gemstones and mother of pearl. They are very intricate. Many are layered, one fitting inside the other.

The Easter of 1885 marked the twentieth anniversary of Czar Alexander III of Russia and his wife Czarina Maria Fedorovna union. The Czar sought to present his wife with an exceptional gift. So he placed an order with a young jeweler, whom history will remember as a one Peter Carl Faberge. The beautiful creations of Faberge had recently caught Maria’s eye. The story goes that Easter morning, Faberge delivered what appeared to be a simple enameled egg. As the Empress was asked to look inside, she finds a golden yolk. Yet again a layer is advanced and within the yolk is a golden hen. Upon the opening of the hen she finds a diamond miniature of the royal crown and a tiny ruby egg concealed inside.

The Faberge eggs history and its artist grandeur have been enjoyed in museums and art galleries all around the world. Replicas of these eggs are now sold for home decor and well as in certain forms of jewelry.
